“Is your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 all-in-one printer’s black or color ink not printing? Or, are you facing the print quality issue with this printer?” If yes, troubleshoot the print quality issue on your printer by performing the following methods one by one.

Method 1: Reinstalling the printer driver (Windows only)

If your printer’s black or color ink cartridge is not printing/responding, reinstall the printer driver on your Windows computer.

  • Uninstall or remove the existing HP printer driver from your computer to reinstall the software.
  • After the uninstallation, download the latest version of the printer driver for your Windows computer.
  • Run the installer file on your computer.
  • Install the software and then check whether the print quality issue is resolved by printing a test page.
  • If the printer prints the test document correctly, it means the print quality issue is resolved. Otherwise, perform the next method given below.

Method 2: Cleaning the printhead

If your HP printer’s printhead is clogged or contains dirt particles, there is a chance for the print quality issue to occur. To clean the printhead, follow the simple instructions given below.

  • Open the Setup menu on your printer.
  • Select the Printer Maintenance option.
  • Scroll down the opened screen and look for the Clean Printhead option.
  • Once you find Clean Printhead, select it. (Note: In case you can’t find the Clean Printhead option, then select the Tools menu followed by the Clean Printhead option.)

  • Wait for the printhead cleaning process to complete and the printer to print the test page.
  • Once the test page is printed, examine it.
  • If the print quality is not good or satisfactory, tap Clean Again. Otherwise, tap Done.

Method 3: Using genuine HP cartridges

  • Using a non-genuine or third-party ink cartridge can also lead to the print quality issue.
  • Check whether you have installed genuine ink cartridges on your printer.
  • If not, replace them with genuine ones.

Method 4: Using an automated tool

  • Using a non-genuine or third-party ink cartridge can also lead to the print quality issue.
  • Check whether you have installed genuine ink cartridges on your printer.
  • If not, replace them with genuine ones.

Method 5: Replacing the ink cartridges

If the cartridge level is low or empty, there is a chance for the print quality issue to occur. In this case, check the estimated ink levels of the cartridges. If the level is empty or low, replace the cartridge with a new one. Locate and tap the Ink Level Indicator icon on your printer’s control panel to check the estimated ink levels of the cartridges. Now, if you find one of the cartridge levels is low or empty, follow the below instructions to replace it.

  • Get the replacement ink cartridge from the HP Store.
  • Open the cartridge door.
  • Locate and remove the low or empty cartridge from its slot.
  • Unpack and install the replacement cartridge in its slot.
  • Close the cartridge door.
